2012 SJLW Historytiles 900x600

2012

Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Auckland (New Zealand), Singapore

With fans having acclimatised to the festival’s new pulse, 2012 aimed to build on the successes of 2010 and 2011. French act and headliner M83 was about to break out, Feist returned, and the rise of electronica was well represented in SBTRKT, John Talabot and Sydney’s own Jonti.

Danny Rogers (Laneway co-founder): “In some ways this was a tough year: we were ahead of the curve a little more then we should have been. Acts like M83 and SBTRKT broke just as Laneway happened. It was a year where we didn’t make a cent, but realised that money was not the driving principle of the event. We just loved hosting Laneway and seeing all these great people come together on an indie summer camp.”

2012 was the year that the Auckland event found a reliable home at Silo Park down in the Wynyard Quarter, where it presently remains. The waterside location provides the festival with a stunning marina backdrop, flanked by the Auckland harbour bridge and the towering old grain silos that gave the area its name.

Mark Kneebone (Laneway NZ co-promoter): “With amazing support again from the developers at Waterfront Auckland, Laneway matured and grew to everything we’d hoped. Steered in content and branding by our Australian partners with the engine room being driven by Kiwis, we had the desire to deliver a unique boutique experience to the New Zealand audience. It’s a festival with pride, passion and unique Kiwi character behind it.”

  • The Horrors (UK): “Big love to all the new friends we made on our jaunt to Australasia. We will be back soon!”
