Hailing from Arnhem Land, 20-year-old BAKER BOY has already made an indelible mark on Australian hip-hop. Last year, Baker set out with one goal: to be Australia’s first Aboriginal artist to rap in a local Indigenous language. With the immediate and undeniable response to his 2017 debut single ‘Cloud 9’, where he effortlessly fuses his native Yolngu Matha language and English, he’s achieved that and so much more. Baker was an undeniable standout at Bigsound 2017; he took out the gong at this year’s triple j Unearthed NIMA Awards; ‘Cloud 9’ won the NT Song of the Year Award in the Hip-Hop category, and he took home the Inaugural Native Tongue Award.
